International Pet Travel Country Questions — 826 Comments

  1. Hello, I`m from Belarus. My dog`s 6 months, it has been vaccinated against rabies 31st January 2015, but hasn`t microchip yet. I plann to travel with it to Turkey in Julyfor 1 month. How is it better to do considering the following -“If your pet has been vaccinated before it was fitted with a microchip, it will have to be vaccinated again after the microchip is inserted”? And what does the domestic quarantine within 3 month mean? Will I be able to leave the country after 1 month of quarantine? Thank you in advance, Oxana. Please, mail me –

  2. John – you will be fine passing through these areas. Carry a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination at least 30 days prior to entering the US.

  3. My wife and I currently live in Mission British Columbia Canada, and are considering a camping trip to Ocean Shores WA. We have a Staffordshire Terrier and have to cross the border at Sumas WA, which has a breed specific ban, as do many of the cities we need to travel through to get to our destination. Are we legally able to travel with our dog through these cities and if so what do we need to do to cross the border?

  4. Aria – if you are flying British Airways, then you will need to fly your pet as manifest cargo as this is the only class of service that BA offers traveling pets. Contact IAG Cargo. They will most likely tell you that you must book the transport through an agent. Unfortunately, this will add to the cost of your trip, however, pets traveling as manifest cargo are held longer during layovers.

  5. Susan, thank you for your response. I’m flying BA and unfortunately my layover is longer than 2 hours β€” I don’t think it can be changed. Does this prevent me from being able to transit with my dog?

  6. I’m flying to the U.S. from Uganda and I have a layover at London Heathrow . . . Does my dog need to follow EU regulations? She has her rabies vaccination and will be checked by a vet for screwworm prior to departure from Uganda, which seem to be the only U.S. requirements. The EU has a lot more but I wonder if they apply if we’re only transiting.

  7. Hella – some airlines do have restrictions on Cane Corso dogs, but most do not. Where are you departing from in the UK and where are you flying to in the US?

  8. Hi,

I plan to move to the USA from the UK and want to take my cane corso as well. Is there any air flights that is willing to deliver a cane corso from the UK to the USA?

  9. Winnie – it depends on what country your pet is entering Taiwan from. Unless your pet is entering Taiwan directly from Japan, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Iceland New Zealand, japan, Norway (excluding Svalbard), Hawaii, Guam and Singapore, your pet will be subject to 21 days of quarantine. Details here:

  10. Hi,

We may be moving to New Zealand from the U.S. with our diabetic dog. Do you know how they handle quarantine for dogs with special medical needs such as insulin injections?

  11. Hi – Is the 21 quarantine an requirement or only subjected based on inspection? My dog has all the vaccines and microchipped. he also recently got a blood test as well. I am going to Taiwan for a month vacation and want to bring him with me. But want to check if the 21 day quarantine period is only subject based on inspection or it’s a must. Thanks!

  12. Melanie – one reason why your vet is telling you that is due to export requirements from China. Your pet may need an inspection from veterinary authorities in Shanghai.

  13. Melanie – as long as your kitten is flying in and out f Shanghai or Beijing on the same airline and the layover is under 2 hours, then the airline will transfer your kitten and it does not need to enter the layover country.

  14. Also I would like to add that I’m being told from a Vet here that I cannot travel with my cat from Hefei to Canada but only from Shanghai. But I assume, regardless of a layover/switch in flights, it would still be possible.

  15. I need to export a kitten on a plane from Hefei, China to Toronto, Canada. There are no direct flights, but only layovers in Shanghai/Beijing. I can manage to fly with the same airline but would need to switch planes during the layover. Is that possible?

  16. Leah – we don’t have the answer to your question. Try going to an search for a transporter in Thailand and direct your question to them. We are located in the US and would not want to give you incorrect information.

  17. Sara – as long as your cat will be flying in and out of the layover country on the same airline and as long as the layovers are under 2 hours, your cat does not need to conform to regulations of the layover country. If your layovers are over 2 hours, you should contact the airline and confirm that they will be holding your cat during the layover. Note that there are airports that require transit permits so you should ask your airlines whether a permit will be necessary in the airports along the route.

  18. Hi I am arranging for my cat to be sent to Vancouver from Thailand and because it is such a long flight there will be a stop or two in another country. Does this mean we have to comply with the quarantine regulations of that particular country (wherever the plane stops) or just those of thailand and canada? he will be flying in cargo.

  19. Petttravel,
Thank you for your answer to my question on 10 January. I would indeed like to contact the embassy to determine the disconnect, so do you mind providing me with a specific name and number or email address for the person you spoke with at the Head of Animal and Animal Products, Border Inspection Department in Turkey? I think it would be quicker to resolve with an actual name.
    Thank you,
    Jean Havens

  20. Jean – our information came from Head of Animal and Animal Products, Border Inspection Department in Turkey. After much confusion regarding import requirements for Turkey, we did a lot of emailing and received confirmation that a titer test is required at least 3 months prior to entry when entering from any country in the world. You may want to have the Embassy check with the Border Inspection Department to confirm. We would be interested to know if you receive a different response.

  21. Nansi – your question is very difficult to answer. There is always a risk when traveling, and the foreign flagged airlines are not required to report pet incidents like US based airlines are. If you are not comfortable flying with Turkish Airlines, you can try British Airways which also has a non-stop flight. (You will need to book through an agent,) KLM and Lufthansa also fly the route with one stop and they have good reputations for transporting pets.

  22. Pettravel,
Can you please tell me where you got your travel requirements to Turkey? I looked on the Turkish Embassy (in Washington DC) webpage and I called them, and the only requirements they mention for bringing a pet to Turkey are a rabies certificate and a US form 7001. No mention of the titer test. And I specifically asked the Turkish embassy person about this titer test and they said no, just the rabies certificate is required. Can you please tell me your sources for the Turkish requirements since this titer test requirement adds significant time to the preparation process? Thank you. -Jean

  23. Hi there pet travel i wonder if you could help me.
I am flying with my dog from Turkey to the uk. From what i understand turkish airlines is apoved to fly from istanbul to london heathrow. i have all documentation- vaccinations, passport, micro chip, blood test and certificate, just need the letter from a state vet a few days before i fly.
my question is will my dog be able to fly with me from istanbul to london heathrow with no problems? i have read contradicting articles everywhere ! and also horror stories about dogs dying on turkish airline flights due to the cargo hold not being heated properly…. thankyou for any help

  24. Do you know if I bring my dog into Thailand by car (from Cambodia) and then fly him out of the airport there, will I need an import visa (to get across the border) and an exit visa (to leave Thailand)? If so, is 1 of the requirements for the exit visa for him to live in Thailand for 6 months before exit?

  25. Oleg – did you try Lufthansa? They fly the route between Kiev and Chicago with only one short layover. KLM also flies the route with one stop.

  26. Hi there,

I am having trouble locating airlines that do unaccompanied dog transport from Ukraine to US (Chicago). Can anyone help with the info and possible apprx. cost?

    Thanks in advance!

  27. Hi Leah – would suggest you look at Bangkok Air out of Cambodia. You will need a transit permit to get through Taiwan, and Eva is good at communicating that. We have heard from several folks who have done this successfully.

  28. Hettie – you are correct that the UK classifies Australia as a Third country. The requirements are to have your kitty microchipped, then vaccinated for rabies (in that order but same vet visit is fine.) at least 21 days prior to entering Scotland. This assumes that you are traveling with your pet or within 5 days before or after your pet’s transport. You will need an Annex IV for Scotland completed by a licensed vet within 10 days of entering Scotland. You can find details and links to instructions and forms here if you need them: If you wish to fly into Edinburgh directly, you must do so on an approved airline (KLM, Lufthansa, Qatar, Thomson) and your kitty must travel as manifest cargo.

You will also need to familiarize yourself with Australia’s export requirements. You can find them here:

  29. I would like to bring my 36 kg rottweiler from Cambodia to America. Right now, the only airlines I can find that will carry over 32 kg from Cambodia are Eva and Cathay. Also, as far as I can tell, I have to go to Bangkok, Thailand to even get on a plane that can structurally carry dogs as checked-in baggage. Right now, I’m looking at going with Eva Air through Taipei. Since I will not be leaving the airport, and I will be there less than 2 hours, will my dog still be required to go through quarintine? Is there any way to avoid quarintine? I think that Hong Kong (Cathay’s layover city) is pretty much the same way. Does anyone have any other ideas or experience?

  30. I have a quick question for the staff here. I am an Aussie considering moving to Edinburgh as part of postgrad honours opportunities. I have a cat I’d like to bring with me. I noticed on the main website it said AUS and NZ are classed as ‘Third Countries’ to the EU and that different rules apply than to other rabies-free countries. Could you please give me a direct link to information regarding pet immigration from AU -> Scotland (and back again potentially)? I’d like to know how this Third Country status applies so that I can make sure all the i’s are dotted and all the t’s crossed and I’m having no luck finding a webpage regarding pet travel from/to AUS/NZ specifically.

    Cheers! πŸ™‚

  31. I wanna bring my cat Lissi with my to the italy skiresort stroblhof ( what do you think is it recommendable? Thanks a lot.

  32. Jennifer – if all the requirements are met, then 10 days of quarantine are required of pets entering from the US. You can find details on bringing your pet to New Zealand here: There should be no quarantine in the US prior to departure. Not sure how you can bring your Dane to the country other than commercial airline.

  33. My husband and I are considering moving from Maine to New Zealand, and are looking into ways to get our Great Dane (105 lbs) and our two cats there without flying in a plane’s cargo hold. I’m having difficulty finding options for a large dog. I’m also having a hard time getting detailed information about quarantine laws for dogs arriving in New Zealand from the United States. Is if 30 days in quarantine (at a facility, I’m guessing) upon arrival? And is there ALSO a quarantine that needs to happen in the US before departure??

    Thank you!

  34. Looking for info on how to get my pit bull from ny to El Salvador. It seems all airlines have a ban on snub nosed breeds in summer or to warmer climates.

  35. Amiera – unfortunately, we don’t have information about bringing a guinea pig to Malaysia. We would suggest you contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia. Sorry we cannot be of more assistance to you.

  36. hello,
is it possible if i want to bring my guinea pig from medan, indonesia to malaysia? and hows the procedure?

  37. Kyle – you should have no problems entering Germany from Slovenia with an EU pet passport updated by your veterinarian with microchip and rabies information. The wait time refers to the first vaccination administered after the chip is implanted. If more than 21 days have expired since that vaccination, then you will be fine.

  38. Hello,

I plan on adopting a GSD where I am currently living, Slovenia. Come March, I will fly out of Munich, Germany to Chicago, Illinois. The dog has a full EU passport, microchip and rabies vaccination up to date. I will also have a veterinarian certified inspection done prior to traveling with him.

Will I run into any issues in Munich? Read a page saying you must wait 21 days, but it was unclear if that was based on the Rabies vaccination, which he already has done.

  39. Christina – that is correct about your dog’s breed being banned in Ontario. They are also banned in Toronto. We do not know of any other province in Canada where they are banned.

  40. We plan to travel into Canada, from the US, with our dog. We plan to cross the Lynden border into B.C. Does anyone know if american staffordshire terrier is allowed to cross at this border? I have read that they are banned in Ontario.
    Thank you.

  41. Katy – most airlines will not transport pets in the cargo hold when the temperature drops below 45 degrees. This for the safety of your pet. Not all airlines flying out of the UK require that your cat travel in cargo. If you are planning to accompany your cat, then try to find one that will fly your cat in the cabin with you.

  42. Sumrah – you will need to contact Emirates Cargo to confirm the answer to your question. Emirates should permit your pets to fly as manifest cargo. We are unsure of the requirments of the United Arab Emirates to import them, however. You will need to contact the Ministry of Environment and Water and inquire. Certainly, a health certificate would be required, but we are unsure if there are additional requirements.

  43. Does anyone know how much it will cost to bring a cat on a flight from the UK to the US on British Airways?
