Good news for pet travel on Qantas Airlines! The airline has reversed its decision not to carry American Staffordshire Terriers on international flights. They will now permit their transport in a metal crate (such as a CR 82 crate) or equivalent crate used for more aggressive breeds. However, the transport must be arranged by a pet transporter.
Additionally, Qantas will transport snub nosed pets (Persians, Himalayan, Bulldogs, Pugs, and Pekinese) in crates one size larger than normally required.
These changes were caused by an overwhelming response from pet owners in Australia who own Staffordshire Terriers and want to use Qantas’ services. Online petitions raised over 7,000 signatures. Good for the airline to react to their customers who travel with their pets!

Thanks for sharing such great post about cats. The social adaptations of dogs and humans are similar enough that dogs can live perfectly happy lives surrounded by humans and vice versa. Dogs are pampered with the best of food and medical care, frequently sleeping in their owners’ comfortable sofa.

Nice to hear that July! To travel internationally you just need to be prepared, for example, a harness has to be fitted correctly onto your dog etc. But if you are travelling inter-state with a single animal then that can be transported with the help of van or a personal vehicle. Well I have travelled a lot of times with my Golden Retriever in my car. All you need is to take care of a few points. I like it when I see people taking so much care of their pets!
These are great news as sometimes it`s impossible to leave our pets at home and not every transport company allows to travel along with a pet, especially, if it`s a large dog breed, such as amstaff or Pitbull. I`m so grateful to Qantas as I`m going with my Staffy to travel. I`ve also found a top quality dog harnesses, muzzles and collars with leashes to make a dog travelling much easier and safer, so I`ll start to make preparations!
Hi Jose – yours is a particularly tough question. Airlines that can accommodate larger crates generally serve long haul routes. That said, if there are other airlines that serve Sydney and your destination airport, it would be worth the inquiry.
My suggestion would be to price a licensed pet transporter to drive your Great Dane. If you go to IPATA.org and search for pet transporters, you will find a respectible number of them in your country that would be able to help you. Sure hope this helps. Susan
Hi Pettravel,
Interesting Thoughts, I need to get from sydney to the gold coast with my great dane and I can’t drive. Qantas and Virgin Blue allow pets but their crate must be under 84 cm and my crate is 87 cm and Jetstar doesnt allow pets. Does anybody know of another airline that allows larger cages or something like that? Thanks in advance!
